Systems Biology Laboratory


MS and PhD projects are available in the areas of computational modeling and bioinformatics data mining of angiogenesis, nitric oxide and oxygen transport, blood flow in the microcirculation, and cell mechanics. Postdoctoral fellowship to conduct research on computational modeling, bioinformatics and systems biology of angiogenesis (neovascularization). Current focus is on the effects of growth factors (VEGF) on VEGF receptors and signal transduction in endothelial cells. Work closely with experimental collaborators. Also, collaborations within the laboratory on multi-scale modeling of angiogenesis are encouraged; other members of the lab develop models of pro- and anti-angiogenic pharmaceutical agents, VEGF-receptor interactions, hypoxia-inducible factor HIF1alpha (a transcription factor), matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), nitric oxide, mechanical factors, and integrative models.

Requirements: Ph.D. in bioengineering, biophysics, molecular/cell biology, physiology, engineering, or equivalent. Strong background and experience in biology and computational/systems biology. Experience in modeling signal transduction is useful.

Research Interests

Dr. Zhuang's research focuses on the interactions among atmosphere, biosphere, and human dimension in the context of climate change, chemical element cycles, and policy-making. One of his major research activities is on carbon exchanges between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere by investigating how changes of climate, soil physics (e.g., permafrost dynamics, change of soil moisture), atmospheric chemicals (e.g., CO2 and O3), land-use and land-cover (e.g.,fire disturbances), affect the carbon assimilation and decomposition with both process-based and inversion modeling approaches. His second major research activity is on modeling CH4 exchanges between the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems. His third major research activity is on analyzing consequences of air pollutants for ecosystem services and the economy. In the Laboratory of Ecosystems and Biogeochemical Dynamics at Purdue, his research group will continueusing numerical models combining lab, field, in-situ observations and remotely-sensed data to study 1) Dynamics of structure and functioning of ecosystems including agricultural ecosystems; 2) Dynamics of major greenhouse gases cycling including CO2, CH4, and N2O; 3) Feedbacks of ecosystems and biogeochemicaldynamics to the climate and society.

University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY � The Rhizosphere Science Laboratory in the Department of Plant and Soil Science at The University of Kentucky is seeking a highly motivated, well qualified M.S. or PhD level student to immediately join the Rhizosphere Science Laboratory to work with a transdisciplinary group of researchers investigating how interactions between endophytic organisms and their plant hosts influence root exudate composition, soil microbial population dynamics and C and N turnover. Research will specifically focus on (1) Identifying key bioactive compounds in plant root exudates using a variety of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, (2) evaluating the influence of bulk and rhizosphere soil physiochemical properties on root exudate production and persistence, and (3) elucidating how microbial population and (4) C and N turnover are affected. The ideal candidate would have prior experience working in a research lab as well as course work (or an interest in pursuing coursework) related to soil chemistry, geochemistry, soil biochemistry, microbiology, plant biology and/or plant physiology. The selected candidate will join a newly emerging interdisciplinary laboratory at the University of Kentucky designed to investigate (using cutting edge tools such as synchrotron X�ray spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, ATR�FTIR, HPLC�MS, ICP�MS, NMR) the dynamic interaction between plants and their soil environment and how these interactions influence ecosystem level processes. Prof. Ling Zang's lab at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Utah, seeks Ph.D. graduate students with research interests in the emerging fields of organic nanomaterials and optoelectronics. The current research projects at the Zang's lab are highly interdisciplinary, breaking down the traditional boundary between chemistry, materials science and physics.

Students involved will be exposed to a variety of cross-discipline areas in nanoscience and nanotechnology, and be trained with a broad range of instrum entations in nanoscale imaging and fabrication. More importantly, they will have the opportunity to work as part of a coherent team in collaboration with different groups from different campuses throughout the US, allowing them to familiarize with teamwork in research, and to be exposed to a range of in
tellectual and scientific methods to solve scientific problems. Students will also be encouraged to attend national or international conferences (e.g. ACS meetings) to discuss and exchange the research with peer scientists working in the related areas.
