Link?ping University (LiU) is characterized by cooperation across subject and faculty borders and by an entrepreneurial spirit in education. Since its foundation in the 1970's, the university has established itself as an innovative and modern institution in both education and research. For instance, LiU is actively engaged in becoming a gender-conscious university, through both research into gender issues, policy making, and more practical measures such as the existence of gender coordinators at each faculty. Scientific excellence and societal benefit are the two guiding principles of LiU. The university is committed not only to preparing its students for the future, but also to fostering research which will have a defining role in shaping this future. During the past decade LiU has experienced rapidgrowth, involving the establishment of a new campus in the twin city of Norrk?ping. With a student population of 25 000 and 3 500 employees, LiU is one of the major universities in Sweden.
The Tema Institute (TEMA) at LiU aims to pursue excellent research and education at undergraduate and advanced levels relevant to society. The Tema Institute aims to provide a major impetus in career development for both future researchers and those who have just entered the field of research. The profile of TEMA since the start has been founded on an interdisciplinary environment, and today there is an emphasis on integrating education and research - to see education and research as interdependent. Important assets for the Institute are the extended responsibility for co-workers and the measures brought about to support progress in education and at the same time advance interdisciplinary research. The Institute is led by a Board and has approximately 200 employees, of which 60 are PhD-students. At the levels ofresearch, research training, post- and under graduate education, the Institute is characterized by multi- and interdisciplinary research areas where social scientists, scholars and natural scientists work together. TEMA is organized in four themes, besides Gender Studies (TEMA GENUS), there are also Child Studies, Technology and Social Change, Water and Environmental Studies.
Department of Gender Studies (TEMA GENUS) is a multi- and interdisciplinary unit of the Tema Institute committed to research, research training and under graduate education. TEMA GENUS engage with the changing patterns of gender in culture, society, economics, science, technology and knowledge production, in theory and practice, and from an interdisciplinary perspective. Gender is studied as intersected by other social categories (ethnicity, sexuality, age, etc). Five research streams are pursued as subprograms of TEMA GENUS. These are Gender and Culture (feminist cultural studies), Gender, Economic Change and Organization, Critical Studies of Men and Masculinities, and Posthumanities - which is closely allied to the fifth subprogram being developed, Gender and Knowledge Production with special reference to the Technical, Natural, and Medical Science Professions (feminist technoscience studies). In close collaboration with gender studies at ?rebro University, and Department of Gender and Medicine of LiU, TEMA GENUS coordinates an international research centre, Centre of Gender Excellence (GEXcel). GEXcel is financed by contributions from the Swedish Research Council. TEMA GENUS is also the host of Nordic and national Swedish research schools (like InterGender) in interdisciplinary gender studies, and works closely with the Centre for Gender Studies and Gender Equality (FORUM). TEMA GENUS is also involved in a wide range of international networks and collaborations concerning research and education. BELGIUM; PhD Positions Odysseus Research Project
The University of Antwerp is a knowledge centre with 3.400 co-workers that performs ground-breaking and innovative research of international standing. The university takes special care to ensure optimum support and supervision of students, and pays constant attention to educational innovation. The university is an autonomous pluralistic institution that is committed to the enhancement of an open, democratic and multicultural society, and it pursues an equal opportunities policy.
The Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Social and Political Science invites applications for

Two PhD positions within an Odysseus research project
Background:
Interest groups are important political actors, which face a changing political environment as a result of globalisation and internationalisation. Obtaining a thorough understanding of how interest groups cope with such challenges is important in explaining their role in democratic policy making. Why, for instance, are some interest groups better capable of exerting influence in a multi-level political system than others? Or, why do some groups seek access to only national governments and others to European institutions as well? Answering these and related questions is the overarching aim of the Odysseus project.
The available PhD-positions concern two sub-fields within the larger project:# The politics of EU territorial lobbying. This project studies the European strategies of interest groups that are territorially defined (such as the port of Antwerp, Schiphol airport or Scottish interests).
# Multi-level venue shopping of interest groups. This project entails a comparative research on how interest groups make use of multiple access opportunities situated at different levels of government (national, regional, European, international). Candidates write a dissertation on one of the above mentioned topics. Candidates are also expected to be an active member of the research group on European and International Politics by contributing to its collective research and fulfilling small supportive and coordinating tasks.
Research environment:Several scholars already participate in this Odysseus-project, which is embedded in the European and International Politics Research Group. They conduct research into interest groups strategies at the WTO, population dynamics of interest groups, and strategies of interest groups to seek access to political and administrative elites. This research group is part of the Political Science Department. Apart from European and international politics, researchers at the department are involved in research into the areas of comparative politics; media, movements and politics; diplomacy and geopolitics, and public administration.
What we have to offer is, in sum:
* an interesting research area and dissertation topic for a period of two years. The appointment will be prolonged with two years after a positive evaluation;* involvement in a highly prestigious Odysseus Program of the Flanders Scientific Foundation (http://www.fwo.be/en/FWOOdysseus.aspx);* a working environment with young and entrepreneurial colleagues;* the opportunity to participate in training and educational programs within an international academic network.

Requirements:We expect that candidates:
* can independently conduct a research project, like to work within a team and are proactive in supporting the research group;* hold a master degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Economics or in another related field within the social science (candidates who graduate this year are also invited to apply);* have obtained excellent grades during their studies;* have good writing skills;* have a visible interest in qualitative and quantitative research methods;* have a special interest in theoretical issues, in particular related to political institutions and political organizations;* have a good command of English (in case of project II on multilevel venue-shopping, also a good command of French or the willingness to learn French)
________________________________________
Application deadline April 15st 2009:
* application form (see http://www.ua.ac.be/main.aspx?c=*VACATURES&n=15761&ct=011072 or call +32 3 265 31 53/54);* letter of application;* curriculum Vitae and a list of grades obtained;* two letters of recommendation;* a written essay (three pages in English) in which you critically discuss the project description which you can obtain from Caelesta Poppelaars (for contact details see below). In this essay, you sketch your ideas on the theoretical and methodological approach you would pursue when conducting research into one of the sub-areas outlined above.

Please send your application to:Professor Jan BeyersDepartement of Political ScienceMeerminne Building, M. 285St. Jacobstraat 2B-2000 AntwerpBelgium
For more information, contact professor Jan Beyers (Jan.Beyers@ua.ac.be) or Caelesta Poppelaars (Caelesta.Poppelaars@ua.ac.be).
